Vehicle Description
This 2016 BMW M4 GTS is a street-legal, track-focused limited-edition variant of the F82-generation M4. Built to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the BMW M3, it serves as the ultimate performance expression of its era, heavily prioritizing weight reduction and extreme track capability over daily drivability.
Technical Specifications & Performance:
- Performance Figures: 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 189.5 mph. It famously clocked a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes and 28 seconds.
- Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (M-DCT) with a bespoke, sharper GTS calibration. No manual was offered.
- Power Output: 493 horsepower @ 6,250 RPM and 443 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 RPM.
- Engine: 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six (S55).
Key Innovative Features:
- Braking & Wheels: Standard equipped with massive M carbon-ceramic brakes tucked inside staggered Acid Orange star-spoke wheels wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
- Adjustable Motorsport Hardware: The car comes standard with a manually adjustable three-way KW coilover suspension system. It also features manually adjustable carbon fiber aerodynamics, including an extended front splitter and a prominent rear wing.
- OLED Taillights: It was the first production automobile in the world to feature advanced Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) taillight technology.
- Water Injection System: The M4 GTS was the first production road car to feature a water injection system. It utilizes a 1.3-gallon distilled water tank located under the trunk floor to spray a fine mist directly into the intake manifold plenum. This drops combustion temperatures by up to 80°F, reducing engine knock and allowing the turbos to safely increase boost pressure from 17.9 PSI to 22 PSI. (Note: If the water tank runs dry, the engine automatically reverts to a standard 444-hp safety tune).
Handling & Suspension:
- Steering & Drivetrain: GTS-specific electric power steering and MDM mode calibration.
- Wheels & Tires: Staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Style 666M forged wheels.
- Brakes: M Carbon Ceramic Brakes (400mm front and 380mm rear).
- Suspension: 3-way manually adjustable M coilover suspension (height, compression, and rebound adjustable).
Lightweight Construction & Exterior:
- Carbon Fiber Components (CFRP): Hood, roof, front splitter, rear wing/spoiler, and driveshaft.
- World-exclusive OLED taillights and LED adaptive headlights.
- Carbon-Fiber Hood: Features a large central air opening to optimize airflow and engine cooling, weighing roughly 25% less than the standard aluminum M4 hood.
- Adjustable Front Splitter: Made of carbon fiber with Acid Orange accents, allowing manual adjustment for track downforce.
- CFRP Roof and Trunk Lid: A lightweight carbon-fiber roof lowers the center of gravity, paired with a contoured trunk lid and a large, multi-position carbon-fiber rear wing.
- Rear Diffuser: An aggressive carbon-fiber rear diffuser channels underbody airflow.
- Aerodynamics: Manually adjustable front splitter and rear wing.
Interior & Technology:
- Seating & Rear Delete: Rear seats removed, featuring a composite rear bulkhead and Acid Orange half-roll cage (US version) or standard bucket seats/lightweight door panels.
- Infotainment & Convenience: Standard navigation system, Harman Kardon surround sound audio system, head-up display, and Bluetooth connectivity.
- Climate Control: Single-zone automatic climate control (multi-zone and heated/cooled seats are unavailable to save weight).
- Titanium Exhaust System: Features quad tailpipes made of lightweight titanium, saving roughly 20% over standard exhaust setups.
- Grille and Gills: High-gloss black double-rib kidney grille and matching M gills with integrated Air Breathers.
